Dental Sedation Options — A Guide for Anxious Patients

If the thought of sitting in a dental chair makes your heart race, you're not alone. Dental anxiety affects an estimated 36% of adults, and about 12% experience severe dental phobia. The good news is that modern sedation options can make your visit comfortable and stress-free. Here's what's available and how each option works.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental procedures. It doesn't replace local anesthesia (the numbing injection that prevents pain) — it works alongside it to calm your nerves, reduce awareness of sounds and sensations, and make time feel like it passes more quickly.

At Summit Ridge Dental, we offer two levels of sedation: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation. Both keep you awake and responsive while dramatically reducing anxiety.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is the lightest and most commonly used form of dental sedation. You breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small mask placed over your nose. Within a few minutes, you feel calm, warm, and slightly euphoric.

How it feels: Most patients describe a pleasant floating sensation. You can still hear and respond to your dentist, but you feel deeply relaxed and less aware of what's happening in your mouth.

How long it lasts: The effects begin within 2-3 minutes and wear off within 5 minutes after the mask is removed. You can drive yourself home and return to normal activities immediately.

Best for: Mild to moderate anxiety, patients who want to drive themselves, routine cleanings and shorter procedures, children with dental nervousness.

Cost: $50-$150 per visit in the Phoenix area.

Oral Conscious Sedation

For patients with more significant anxiety — or for longer, more involved procedures — oral sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation. You take a prescription sedative pill (typically a benzodiazepine like triazolam) about an hour before your appointment.

How it feels: You feel deeply relaxed and drowsy. Many patients feel like they're in a dreamlike state and have little memory of the procedure afterward. You remain conscious and can respond to instructions, but you're much less aware of time, sounds, and sensations.

How long it lasts: The sedative effects can last 4-6 hours after your procedure. You will feel groggy and should plan to rest for the remainder of the day.

Best for: Moderate to severe dental anxiety, long procedures (implant placement, multiple fillings), patients with a strong gag reflex, patients who have avoided the dentist for years and need significant catch-up work.

Cost: $200-$500 per visit depending on the medication and procedure length.

Important: You must have someone drive you to and from your appointment. You should not operate a vehicle or make important decisions for the rest of the day.

Beyond Medication: How Our Team Helps Anxious Patients

Sedation is one tool, but our approach to dental anxiety goes further. Dr. Maria Vasquez has built her practice around gentle, patient-centered care, and our entire team is trained to support anxious patients.

Go-at-your-pace appointments. We never rush. If you need a break, raise your hand and we stop immediately. You're in control the entire time.

Explain-before-we-touch approach. Every instrument, every step, is explained before it happens. No surprises.

Noise-canceling headphones. Bring your own music or use our headphones to drown out sounds that trigger anxiety.

Warm blankets and pillows. Physical comfort reduces tension. Small touches make a big difference.

Check-in signals. We establish a hand signal (usually a raised hand) that means "I need you to pause." Knowing you can stop at any time gives you real control.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation have excellent safety records when administered by trained dental professionals. At Summit Ridge Dental, your heart rate and blood oxygen levels are monitored throughout the procedure using a pulse oximeter.

Before recommending sedation, we review your complete medical history, current medications, and any allergies. Certain conditions — including severe respiratory issues, sleep apnea, and some medication interactions — may affect which sedation option is safest for you.

We follow all Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners guidelines for sedation administration and maintain current certifications in sedation protocols.

"I avoided the dentist for eight years because of my anxiety. Dr. Vasquez was incredibly patient, and the oral sedation made the whole experience feel like it lasted five minutes instead of two hours. I actually fell asleep at one point. I'm finally caught up on my dental work."
